🧈✨ Daily Bread (and Other Things I Forget to Thank God For)

Some mornings, I wake up and realize I’ve been running on fumes and iced coffee for far too long — the kind of days where gratitude feels like a distant luxury.

But lately, God’s been reminding me that daily bread doesn’t always come as miracles or breakthroughs. Sometimes it’s just biscuits. Literal, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits that somehow make the world feel softer for a moment.

So today, we’re making Butter Swim Biscuits, and we’re slowing down long enough to notice the small graces that keep us going.

🙏 A Little Heart Before the Recipe

In the book of Matthew, Jesus tells us to pray for our daily bread — not our yearly plan, not our ten-year goals, just enough for today.

“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11

And honestly? That hits different at this stage of life.

I’ve spent years chasing what’s next — better jobs, better routines, better versions of myself — and in the process, I’ve overlooked what’s already here.

  • The warmth of my home.
  • The laughter of my family.
  • The quiet company of Samuel curled up on my lap.

It turns out gratitude doesn’t grow from having everything — it blooms when we start noticing the everyday mercies that have been there all along.

🧈 Butter Swim Biscuit Recipe

(Warm, golden, unapologetically comforting)

📝 Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk (or milk with a squeeze of lemon juice)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted

🍯 Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (because good things start hot and fast).
  2. Melt the butter in an 8×8 baking dish — let it coat the bottom like a golden promise.
  3. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined. Don’t overthink it — biscuits love simplicity.
  5. Spread the dough evenly into the buttered pan. It’s okay if it’s imperfect; you are too, and that’s working out beautifully.
  6. Cut into 9 squares before baking (this helps the butter sneak into all the corners).
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp but the inside feels like a hug.
  8. Serve warm, preferably with honey, jam, or the gratitude of knowing you didn’t skip breakfast this time.

☕ While They Bake… A Thought

If we slow down long enough to notice, even small moments can feed us:

  • The smell of butter browning in the oven.
  • The sound of coffee dripping into your favorite mug.
  • The comfort of quiet when the world feels loud.

Every bit of it — all those small, good, daily things — are reminders that He provides.

🕊️ Reflection

Maybe today your “daily bread” isn’t actual bread at all.
Maybe it’s peace after a restless night.
Maybe it’s the phone call that arrived right on time.
Maybe it’s a biscuit on a plate — soft, golden, and proof that grace shows up in the simple things.

We don’t have to chase extraordinary blessings when the ordinary ones are already on the table.

🐾 P.S. from Samuel

He sat by the oven the entire time. I think he understands holy moments better than most humans. Gratitude doesn’t need grand gestures — just open eyes and a full heart.

May your days be buttered with grace and sprinkled with joy,

Natalie💛
