Letās be honest. We all have moments when our world revolves around me, myself, and I. We want the biggest slice, the front seat, the credit, the comfort. We make decisions based on what benefits us the most, sometimes without a second thought about how it affects others.
But selfishness is sneakyāit can look like self-care, sound like confidence, and even feel like self-preservation. But when left unchecked, it quietly takes over our hearts, making room for pride and pushing out compassion.
š”Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”āPhilippians 2:3-4
That verse hits deep. It reminds me that selfishness is not just about being greedy with thingsāit’s about being stingy with love, time, patience, forgiveness. It’s choosing me over we, even when I know better.
But hereās the good news: God is full of grace. He doesnāt shame usāHe invites us to live differently. Each day, we get to choose humility over entitlement. We get to ask, “Lord, help me see others the way You see them.”
And in doing so, we experience a freedom that selfishness can never offer: the joy of loving others well, the peace of putting God’s heart first, and the beauty of becoming more like Jesus.
š”Some things to ponder:
- In what areas of my life am I prioritizing myself at the expense of others?
- How can I practice selflessness in small, everyday ways this week?
- What does humility look like in my relationships?
A Prayer to Close:
šLord, I confess that I often think of myself first. Help me recognize the moments when selfishness sneaks in. Teach me to love generously, to serve joyfully, and to value others the way You do. Thank You for Your mercy and for the chance to try again today. Amen.
Blessings,
